The European Union (EU) is an association made up of 27 European countries. The population in the EU
countries is currently around half a billion people. Collectively, the Member
countries in the European internal market achieve the largest gross domestic product in the world. The EU
in its present form is founded on the Treaty on the European Union that came into force on 1 November 1993, on which the so-called three pillars of the association of states is based: European Community (EC), common foreign and security policy (CFSP) as well as police and judicial cooperation in criminal matters (PJCCM).
